Formerly Indonesia Now with Duncan Graham - and still Interpreting Indonesia with a Western perspective:
FAITH IN INDONESIA
The shape of the world a generation from now will be influenced far more by how we communicate the values of our society to others than by military or diplomatic superiority. William Fulbright, 1964
Hi, I stumbled onto your blog through google and I loved the article on Koreans living in Surabaya (http://indonesianow.blogspot.com/2006/03/koreans-in-east-java.html). I am a Korean and I grew up in Indonesia majority of my life. I am currently living in California. I am very glad that I found your blog because now I can be updated on what is going on in Indonesia whenever I feel homesick.
Anyways, I wanted to point out few things about the article. Mr. Kim Soo Yong was able to talk to the President of South Korea in a meeting about 2 months ago and I believe he pitched some of the ideas mentioned in the article. But recently Mr. Kim resigned as the chairman of the Surabaya Korean Association. During his time he was able to bring a lot of politics into the Surabaya Korean Association (which used to be mainly focused on entertaining the Koreans residing in Surabaya). However, I am worried that his ambitions might die with his resignation. That is why I hope the elders of the Korean community will set up a separate organization that will facilitate the politics of the Korean-Surabaya community.
And as for Koreans living in Surabaya, they had been a lot of Korean oriented shops opening in recent years. Therefore the people tend to just go to places that are run by Koreans for Koreans. Currently there are 4-5 Korean restaurants, 2 Korean saloons, 2 Korean pub & karaoke, 2 Korean supermarkets. I am not sure if the numbers increased but that is where Koreans tend to mingle with each other. And I would also like to point out Koreans love to drink and that usually happens in the restaurants and karaoke. We are not too comfortable with bar/pub scenes.
Again, I would like to say this blog page is awesome and I will be coming back regularly!
